A downstem is an essential part of your bong that won’t function properly without it. A downstem is a hollow tube that connects your bong bowl to the inner percolation chamber of your bong. When a user takes a hit the smoke travels through the downstem and out through the end in the water. The tip of the downstem usually has diffuser slits or holes that increase the amount of bubbles that are produced to help percolate the smoke through the water.
If you have broken your downstem and need to replace it then you need to make sure you buy a new one that is the correct size for your pipe.
If you have a downstem you would like to replace, use a measuring tape or ruler to measure from the bottom of the joint connection to the tip. This is the measurement that is used for buying and selling downstems.
If you don’t have a downstem to measure then you’ll need to get a measurement from your pipe to figure out what size you need to buy. Insert a pencil into the downstem opening of your bong so it goes down as far as you would want your downstem to go. You will want to mark the pencil where the end of the joint meets the inside of your bong. Take the pencil out and measure from the mark to the end. This will be the measurement you need to buy the correct size.
Measuring considerations: Make sure the downstem is not so long that it touches the glass on the bottom of your bong. Also make sure that it is long enough that the water will cover the diffuser holes when you have the perc chamber filled with the proper amount of water.
Joint sizing: Downstems are available in as many sizes and gender configurations as there are for bongs. Standard sizes for glass on glass bongs include 10mm, 14mm and 18 or 19mm. Many pipes have an 18/19mm joint connection to accept an 18mm to 14mm downstem and the downstem accepts a 14mm bowl. Some pipes use a male gender configuration but it is much more common for a pipe to have a female joint connection where the downstem and bowl fit into the pipe.Get Free Shipping
