What Is A Banger Nail?
A banger is an attachment that connects to your dab rig and is akin to the bowl on a bong. Bangers are used with various concentrates instead of dry herbs.
How Do You Use A Banger?
Attach the banger nail to your dab rig and then decide if you are going to do a cold start or if you will heat your banger first. With a cold start you drop your dab into the banger bucket first and then heat the bottom with your torch until your concentrate begins to melt. Then set your carb cap on top of the banger and inhale. The cold start is a great method for keeping the temperature low and preserving those precious terpenes. Alternatively, heat up your banger until you have it at your optimal temperature and then use a dabber tool to scoop your desired concentrate amount into the banger bucket, cap it and inhale. Try both methods to see which way you prefer.
Banger Nail Types
Flat Top Banger - This style allows you to place a carb cap on top and leave it on there hands-free. Accommodates a wide variety of carb caps. Variations of the flat top include a beveled edge, deep bucket and thick bottom.
Beveled Edges - provide you with a better airtight seal when you have your bubble carb cap sitting on top since there is more surface area that is coming into contact. More of the air passes through the carb cap and increases the negative pressure inside thus creating more vapor at a lower temperature.
Deep Bucket Banger - This style puts your dab further away from the downtube so that you don’t lose as much concentrate through splatter and keeps it inside the bucket. This style is best paired with a deep nose carb cap that can bring air down deep into the banger where your concentrates are.
Thick Bottom Bangers - have an extra thick disc of quartz on the bottom that absorbs and retains heat for a longer period of time. This gives you more time for dab sesh so you don’t have to rush. These are great for cold start sessions.
Thermal - Think of a thermal banger like a double-paned window, the outer layer and space between protect the inner heated bucket from the ambient atmosphere so it retains heat for longer. Heat the bottom and put a bubble style carb cap on top.
Thermochromic Quartz Banger - With a color changing thermochromic banger you can take timing and guesswork out of your heat up. The crushed colored glass trapped between the inner and outer quartz bucket layers turns color when the banger is heated to the optimal dabbing temperature so you know when to stop torching.
Diamond Knot - The Diamond Knot is like a regular banger with a quartz knot fused on the inside of the bucket. You heat the bucket like normal and drop your dab onto the top of the knot. The concentrate will spread out and engulf the surface area of the knot. The added mass and surface area of the knot provide increased heat retention and vaporization.
Flared Bottom - A flared bottom banger provides a larger surface area for your concentrate to spread out and vaporize. The base has rounded corners that make it easier to swab out with a cotton bud.
Terp Slurper Vacuum - This interesting take on a banger pulls air flow through the slits in the mini dish at the bottom. As you inhale through your dab rig the air flow pushes all of your concentrate back into the heated center column of the banger bucket to ensure that it is all vaporized. An excellent choice for those that prefer large dabs.
Quartz eNail Banger - A nail made to be used with an eNail setup. The eNail heating coil fits around the diameter of the banger bucket and transfers heat through the banger material. A built-in rest on the banger holds the heating coil in place.
Banger Nail Sizes
One of the great things about bangers is that they come in a variety of sizes to fit any bong or dab rig. If you already have a bong and you want to start dabbing you can simply buy a banger to fit it instead of having to buy a whole new rig. You can buy bangers in 10mm, 14mm and 18mm (19mm) with 14mm being the most popular and common size.
While most bangers you come across will be made with quartz, less commonly they can be made with titanium and ceramic. Quartz and ceramic offer superior terpene flavor but are delicate so you have to be very careful with them. Grade 2 titanium is virtually indestructible and resistant to corrosion. If you purchase a titanium banger you’ll probably never have to buy one again. All three of these materials are great handling high temperatures and are optimal for dabbing.
How To Clean A Quartz Banger
It is best to clean out your quartz banger after every session once it has cooled down and safe to handle. Use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to swab the inside of the bucket after each use. Once the banger gets really gunked up and sticky you’ll need to do a more thorough cleaning. Dilute isopropyl alcohol 3-to-1 with water and add some table salt to make a cleaning solution. Put the banger and cleaning solution into a ziplock bag or sealed plastic container to shake the banger around and let the cleaning solution do its magic. Once most of the nasties have been removed, rinse your banger clean and it will be ready for use once again.
